History of Barry Smith in Comic Book Art

Barry Windsor Smith saw his artwork first published in 1967 by drawing pin-up illustrations of licensed Marvel characters for the UK market. They were featured in the UK-based comics Terrific and Fantastic, published under Odhams Press.

After flying to New York to meet with Marvel Comics editor Stan Lee, Smith was offered a job for his Jack Kirby-esque style of drawing.

His first assignment was the cover art and story for Uncanny X-Men #53 in 1969. He then drew for Daredevil #50-#52, Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. #12 and a Western short story called Haf-Breed for Gunfighters #4.

In 1970, he was assigned to do a sword-and-sorcery story by Roy Thomas called Starr the Slayer. Thomas was so impressed with his work that he asked him to draw Marvel's revamping of the Conan the Barbarian character.

In 1970, Smith drew the first issue of Conan Barbarian #1 and would provide the bulk of the cover art and interiors, as well as contributing to the writing of storylines, until his final issue of Conan the Barbarian #24 in 1973.

This series brought the publication and Smith himself numerous awards and accolades. During his time at Marvel, Smith also drew for series like, Astonishing Tales, Iron Man, Fantastic Four and Marvel Premiere.

In the 1990's Smith left Marvel for Valiant Comics, a new publisher which had just been launched by former Marvel editor-in-chief and writer Jim Shooter. Shooter hired Smith on to serve as the company's creative director and lead artist.

The publisher had acquired the licensing for many of the Gold Key Comics characters and series, such as Magus, Robot Fighter and Doctor Solar. Valiant also launched their own original series as well with titles like X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Shadowman, Bloodshot and Eternal Warrior, many of which were drawn by Smith.

Smith has won numerous awards over his impressive career including an Eisner Award, a Harvey Award, an Eagle Award and a Shazam award among many others.
