Jack Abel
Jack Abel who often worked under the pseudonym Gary Michaels, began his comic book career in the late 1940's and his first published work was in 1951. Abel is considered to be one of the most revered inkers in the industry.
He started inking stories for Mike Esposito and Ross Andru's publishing company Mr. Publications before being hired on at Atlas Comics.
He also freelanced for Prize Comics, inking some of their Western titles like Prize Comics Western. His inking was so sought after that by the end of the 1950's, Abel had inked for American Comics Group, Avon Comics, Harvey Comics and Hillman Periodicals.
In his later career Abel would go on to make a name for himself as a penciller as well while working for DC Comics on titles like Our Fighting Forces, Our Army at War, Star Spangled Stories and All-American Men of War. He also inked for DC as well, succeeding George Klein as inker on the longtime popular DC series Superman Family. Abel also inked Legion of Super-Heroes, Action Comics and on certain issues of Superboy.
In the 1970's Abel moved over to Marvel Comics, inking for Gene Colan on Iron Man and Tales of Suspense. He also worked on series like Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Blade, The Incredible Hulk and Master of Kung Fu.
Abel would also ink for smaller publishers as well like Gold Key on Tales of Mystery and Charlton Comics on Midnight Tales.
In 2016, Abel was nominated and tied for runner-up for the Inkwell Awards Special Recognition Award.
