History of Mark Bagley in Comic Book Art

Mark Bagley got his start in the comic book industry after winning a Marvel fan drawing contest, the the Marvel Try-Out Book in 1983. Bagley received first place for pencilling amongst thousands of contestants and then went on to meet Marvel's Editor-in-Chief, Jim Shooter at a comic convention.

He was given the pencilling duties on several low level assignments like Visionaries and drawing Marvel Universe Cards, before starting to draw back-up stories for Captain America.

In 1989, he started drawing for the new series, New Warriors, and was their primary penciller until issue #25 when he left to go draw for The Amazing Spider-Man. Bagley took over for Erik Larsen in 1991 and in The Amazing Spider-Man #361, along with David Micheline introduced the character of Carnage. In 1993, the two produced the limited series, Venom: Lethal Protector.

In 2000, Ultimate Spider-Man was launched as a way to create new series based on Marvel's past primary franchises and was Bagley assigned to drawing duties with Brian Michael Bendis writing the series.

The two collaborated on the first 111 issues consecutively, making it among the longest running partnerships in American comic book history and the longest ever for Marvel Comics, beating out the Fantastic Four collaboration of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

In 2008, Bagley left Marvel for a three-year contract with DC Comics, where he began working on the weekly series Trinity, which featured Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. Bagely also drew several issues of Batman and the bulk of the #38-#53 issue run of Justice League of America.

In 2011, Bagley returned to Marvel and started woking on Avengers Assemble with Brian Michael Bendis. In 2012, he relaunched the Fantastic Four series with writer Matt Fraction, and also provided art work for the Hulk series in 2014.
