History of Sean Murphy in Comic Book Art

Sean Murphy attended Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, and then Savannah College of Art and Design. While still a student at Savannah College of Art and Design, Murphy began providing artwork for Dark Horse Comics on series like Star Wars and Noble Causes, as well as other projects for the publisher.

Murphy also worked for DC Comics providing artwork for the book Batman/Scarecrow: Year One in collaboration with DC writer Bruce Jones. He served as the artist for on the series Joe the Barbarian, and worked on and off for the series Hellblazer.

Murphy published his first original graphic novel entitled Off Road in 2005, for which he won an American Library Association Award for young adults. He also did the illustration work for the Dark Horse series Outer Orbit in 2006.

Murphy also pencilled and wrote Punk Rock Jesus, a six-issue miniseries published under DC subsidiary Vertigo Comics in 2012. The series was entirely black and white, and centred around a clone of Jesus who was the star of his own reality television show as a child, but now a grown man and quite rebellious.

Murphy himself described the series as a passion project which was years in the making, where the artist could tackle deeper subject matter such as religion and the American media landscape. The series received positive reviews from critics and fans alike.
