History of Tony Akins in Comic Book Art

Tony Akins began his career in the comic book industry in the late 1980s and was a founding member of the staticCreeps, a group of artists and creators who pioneered a new aesthetic which mixed a hybrid of Japanese manga and traditional mainstream American comic art.

The group came to prominence during the late 1980's and early 1990's. An example of Akins work in this style can be found in Comico Comics Red Dragon, written by Brian Azzarello published in 1992.

Akins also pencilled and provided the cover art for another Comico publications, Elementals, written by Bill Willingham. 

Akins served as the artist for the Marvel series Rust, written by Fred Schiller which brought him much critical acclaim. Following that project, Akins drew the first comic book adaptation of Terminator, published by NOW Comics. He has also guest drawn on titles like Mundan's Bar and Nexus. 

He has drawn for several Dark Horse science-fiction titles as well including Aliens and Star Wars - Tales of the Jedi: The Freedom Nass Uprising. 

Perhaps he is best known for his work on the series Fables, beginning with issue #22 and later Jack of Fables for DC Comics. Akins has guest drawn on the Wonder Woman series as well for issues #5, #6, #10, #13, #14, #17-#19 as part of The New 52 series, written by Azzarello.

Akins was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best New Series for his work on Jack of Fables.
