History of Will Eisner in Comic Book Art

Will Eisner began drawing for Wow Magazine in 1935. In 1939, he was commissioned to create a superman-like superhero named Wonder Man by Victor Fox, a former DC Comics accountant who was planning to launch his own publishing company.

Eisner wrote and drew the first issue entitled Wonder Comics. Following its release, DC sued Fox for the character's likeness to their Superman.

In 1940, Eisner created the original character of The Spirit, a middle-class masked crimefighter whose real name was Denny Colt. The character was featured in several syndicated Sunday newspapers with a weekly section called The Spirit Section.

Throughout the 1940s, The Spirit Section was in over twenty Sunday papers and at one time had five million copies in circulation. The series ran up until 1952.

In 1941 Eisner was drafted into the Army, where he created the character Joe Dope, for an educational comic strip called Army Motors. He worked on Army Motors throughout the war years and in 1950, launched a follow-up magazine called PS, The Preventative Maintenance Monthly, which ran up until 1971.

Following his return home from service, Eisner continued working on The Spirit comics. Eisner is cited as the godfather of the graphic novel, being among the first to do so in the 1970s with A Contract with God, published in 1978.

The National Cartoonist Society has awarded Eisner with their Comic Book Awards five times in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1987 and 1988, in addition to giving him their Story Comic Book Award in 1978.

He also won a Reuben Award in 1998 and has an award named after him simply called the Eisner Award.
