History of Brad Anderson in Comic Book Art

Brad Anderson graduated in 1942 from Brocton Central School in New York, before joining the US Navy, where he served until 1946.

During his service, Anderson began submitting cartoons to several Navy publications. After leaving the navy, Anderson enrolled at Syracuse University with the intention of becoming an industrial designer.

He graduated in 1951 with a B.F.A. in Fine Arts and a major in advertising. Following his graduation he relocated to Utica, New York to work for the advertising agency Ball & Grier.

In 1953, Anderson shifted his focus to freelancing cartoons for various magazines and papers. He drew the comic strip Grandpa's Boy from 1953-1966.

Anderson gained popularity with his creation of Marmaduke in 1954, a regular daily comic strip which he drew up until his death. Marmaduke followed the lives of the Winslow family and their pet dog, a Great Dane named Marmaduke.

Anderson won the National Cartoonists Society Newspaper Panel Cartoon Award for Marmaduke in 1978.
