History of Jimmy Murphy in Comic Book Art

Jimmy Murphy was a cartoonist who became best known for his creation of Toots and Casper, although he began his career selling political cartoons to local papers in Omaha, Nebraska as a teenager.

In 1918, Murphy moved to New York and took a job as a cartoonist, under the hiring of publisher William Randolph Hearst, at the New York Journal and the New York American.

Murphy created the comic strip, Doc Attaboy, about a middle-aged doctor who was more preoccupied with billing his patients rather than curing them. The comic strip was published by the New York Journal and lasted less than a year.

Following the discontinuation of Doc Attaboy, Murphy created the comic strip, Toots and Casper for the New York American. Murphy used his wife, Matilda Katherine Crane Murphy to serve as the model for Toots. In 1919, King Feature Syndicate picked up the strip and by 1925, it was running in a number of other papers.

Murphy left New York for California and moved into Beverly Hills. He became notorious for missing deadlines, and often had to ship his comic strips back east via air express due to his love of golf and motoring.

Toots and Casper's daily comic strip ran until 1951, and the Sunday comic strip carried on until 1956. Murphy created another comic strip back in 1926 called It's Papa Who Pays! which would run above Toots and Casper as a topper until 1956. The series was so popular it was often imitated by other cartoonists.

Murphy was also a contributor to the World War II booklet on nutrition, entitled Eat Right to Work and Win, published in Toronto by Swift Canadian Co. Ltd.

Murphy licensed his creation of Toots and Casper out to merchandisers to create dolls, books, pins and other merchandise from which he profited handsomely.
