History of John Romita Jr in Comic Book Art

John Romita Jr. is the son of John Romita Sr., a famous longstanding comic book artist who worked primarily under Marvel Comics for much of his career.

Romita Jr.'s first contribution to the comic book industry came at the age of only 13 when he created the character, the Prowler, who was featured in The Amazing Spider-Man #78.

Romita Jr. began his professional career working for Marvel UK, drawing sketches of covers for reprints. By the mid-seventies, Romita was working for Marvel in the United States and gained popularity for his run on the Iron Man series with writer David Michelinie and artist Bob Layton.

The three introduced several new characters to the series such as Bethany Cabe, Tony Stark's bodyguard/love interest and rival industrialist Justin Hammer.

In the 1980s, Romita Jr. took over artistic duties on The Amazing Spider-Man, the hit series that his father helped to popularize during his run on it as well. During this period Romita Jr. was also the artist on the series Dazzler for its launch.

Romita also had a run on the Uncanny X-Men series from 1983-1986 and then again in 1993. He also worked on Daredevil, during which time the arch nemesis character Tyhphoid Mary was created, with Romita providing the full pencil work.

He also worked on the crossover series Punisher/Batman as well as the John Byrne miniseries The Punisher: War Zone and Black Panther. In 2007, Romita Jr. worked on the five-issue crossover miniseries World War Hulk.

Along with 62 other comic book artists including his father, Romita Jr. holds two Guinness World Records, one for Fastest Production of a Comic Book and the other for Most Contributors to a Comic Book.

In 2012, Romita Jr. began working for DC Comics providing the pencil-art for the publisher's flagship series, Superman.

In 1994, he won an Inkpot Award and in 2002, along with writer Michael Straczynski and inker Scott Hanna won an Eisner Award for Best Serialized Story: The Amazing Spider-Man #30-35, entitled, Coming Home.
