History of Val Mayerik in Comic Book Art

Val Mayerik began working in the comic book industry after completing college. He met Dan Adkins, who was working for Marvel Comics as an inker and Mayerik was hired on as his assistant.

Shortly thereafter, Mayerik showcased his talent as a penciller and began pencilling over some of Adkin's layouts, beginning with the eight-page story Spell of the Dragon, which was published in Chamber of Chills #2, a horror-fantasy anthology.

He then contributed pencilling for Conan the Barbarian #21. From there, Mayerik was assigned to pencil the comic book adaptation for H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man in Supernatural Thrillers #2 in 1973.

That same year, Mayerik became the regular artist on the swamp-monster character Man-Thing, a regular feature in the series Fear from issue #13 onward.

He was also responsible for the introduction of Howard the Duck along with writer Steve Gerber. Mayerik and Gerber would collaborate on several other series, like Supernatural Thrillers and The Frankenstein Monster. Mayerik also drew Marvel Preview #5-6, and pencilled the final six-issues of the jungle series, Ka-Zar.

Mayerik also drew for Heavy Metal magazine, as well as Warren Publishing for titles like Young Master. He provided artwork to Eclipse Comics, First Comics, Now Comics, Pacific Comics and even to Harvey Pekar's self-published American Splendo series.

He has also drawn artwork for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering, and published several books of his collected works.
