History of Alex Ross in Comic Book Art

Alex Ross began his professional career working as a storyboard artist for an advertising agency. His first published comic was in 1990, entitled, Terminator: Burning Earth, a five-issue miniseries for which Ross provided all the artwork.

In 1995, Ross created his own original series along with writer Kurt Busiek and penciller Brett Anderson called Astro City. The series explored how superheroes, civilians and villains interact with each other when the fantastic is commonplace, a theme that Marvel Comics was exploring at the time, although Astro City was published by Image Comics and then later Windstorm Comics. Ross created all the covers and the costumes of the characters.

Ross began working with Mark Wald on the 1996 DC Comics series, Kingdom Come. The series focused on the concept of Superman and several other prominent superheroes coming out of retirement to stave off a group of young brutal anti-heroes in the far off future in the DC Universe.

Following the completion of Kingdom Come, Ross took a break from superhero stories and created the original series Uncle Sam, an experimental look into the darker side of American History, the series was met with positive critical acclaim.

Ross is known for his lenticular cover art for series such as Batman: War on Crime, Shazam! Power of Hope, Superman: Peace on Earth and Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth, all of which were released in celebration of DC Comics' 60th anniversary.

Alex Ross art has won numerous awards, including ten Eisner Awards for Best Cover Artist and Best Painter. Ross has also won eleven Harvey Awards for Best Cover Artist and Best Penciller.
