History of Arthur Adams in Comic Book Art

Arthur Adams began drawing fan art and pin-ups at comic conventions, before gaining the attention of editor Roy Thomas of Marvel Comics. His first professional work for Marvel was providing the artwork for the five issue mini-series Longshot, written by Marvel editor Ann Nocenti.

From there, Adams became heavily associated with the X-Men franchise, drawing poster art and providing artwork for certain issues of Uncanny X-Men and the 1980s spinoff series New Mutants Special Edition #1.

Adams is perhaps most famously known for his 1987 X-Men poster. It featured Wolverine jumping out at the viewer, with every member of the X-Men team behind him.

Adams also drew Web of Spider-Man Annual #2, which featured encounters with some of the New Mutants. Through the 1980s Adams would provide much of the cover art for The New Mutants, and he he drew twenty of the twenty-three issue series Classic X-Men.

In 1989, he also drew several issues of X-Factor and the one-shot Excalibur: Mojo Mayhem. Adams provided all the interior work for Uncanny X-Men Annuals in 1986, 1988 and 1990.

While working for Marvel, Adams also freelanced for other publishers, including DC Comics, drawing several pages of Batman #400 and Action Comics Annual #1. He also freelanced for Comico Comics, illustrating both Gumby Summer Fun Special #1 and Gumby's Winter Fun Special, written by Steve Purcell.

In the 1990s, Adams had brief runs on several other Marvel series including Hulk, Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Ghost Rider. He also worked for Dark Horse Comics during this period as well, on a number of various Godzilla titles like Godzilla Colour Special and King Kong vs. Godzilla.

Since the 2000s, Adams has been working a lot with DC Comics on series like Superman, Batman, JLA: Scary Monsters and others.

He has won several awards over his career, including a Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award in 1986 and in 1988 he won the Eisner Award for Best Single Issue for Grumby Summer Fun Special #1. In 2017, he was the recipient of the Inkpot Award.
