History of Mike Allred in Comic Book Art

Mike Allred began working in the comic book industry in 1989 after publishing a 104-page graphic novel entitled Dead Air, published by Slave Labor Graphics.

He published his second graphic novel in 1990, entitled Graphique Musique and the follow-up similarly titled, Grafik Muzik in 1991. Both of those were published by Caliber Comics.

Allred's most popular character is Madman, first appeared as Frank Einstein in Creatures of the Id and then again in Grafik Muzik. In 1992, Madman got his own self-titled miniseries through Tundra Publishing. The character was then relaunched as Madman Comics via Dark Horse Comics several years after in 1994.

That iteration of the character gained much popularity, and the series was nominated for several Harvey Awards. It ran for a total of 20 issues before ending in 2000. A variation of Madman was relaunched again from 2007-2009 through Image Comics, renamed Madman: Atomic Comics. The series ran for a total of 17 issues.

Allred has guest drawn for other series like Neil Gaiman's The Sandman in 1993, the two have collaborated on a number of comics like Wednesday Comics and The Madman All-New Giant-Size Super-Ginchy Special! He also provided illustrations for the X-Force series.

Allred is also known for creating several other popular series like Red Rocket, a science-fiction based comic published by Dark Horse and The Atomics.

In 2013, Allred and writer Matt Fraction produced a Fantastic Four spin-off series, simply entitled FF, and the following year he provided the artwork for a relaunch of Marvel's Silver Surfer series in 2014.

Allred has won numerous awards over his career, beginning in 2005 when he won the Special AML Award for The Golden Plates. In 2009, he won an Inkpot Award. In 2016, Allred won the Eisner Award for Best Single Issue/One Shot for Silver Surfer #11 and in 2021 he also won the Eisner Award for Best Penciller/Inker for his artwork on Bowie: Stardust, Rayguns and Moonage Daydreams.
