History of Al Milgrom in Comic Book Art

Al Milgrom started working in the comic book industry in 1972 as an assistant for inker Murphy Anderson. Milgrom then freelanced for Charlton Comics, Warren Publishing and Atlas Seaboard before taking a permanent position with Marvel Comics.

Milgrom made his name known in the industry after he became a penciller on the Captain Marvel series from 1975-1977. He also pencilled the Guardians of the Galaxy feature in Marvel Presents.

In 1977, Milgrom began working for DC Comics as an editor, during which time he co-created the original Firestorm, Ronnie Raymond with writer Gerry Conway.

In 1979, Milgrom went back to Marvel to serve as an editor there, editing the complete 10-year run of the title Marvel Fanfare, which produced a total of 60 issues. He also edited The Incredible Hulk and designed the U-Foes costumes.

From 1983-1985 he pencilled The Avengers, and then subsequently The West Coast Avengers from 1985-1988. Also, from 1984-95 he served as editor to both Kitty Pryde and Wolverine and Secret Wars II from 1985-1986 and in 1987, Milgrom wrote the limited series, Mephisto.

He also wrote and drew a 10-issue run of The Spectacular Spider-Man #90-#100 as well as The Incredible Hulk series from 1986-1987. In 1991, he wrote the limited series The Deadly Foes of Spider-Man following a story arc he'd just written for The Amazing Spider-Man.

As an inker, Milgrom had an eight-year run on X-Factor from 1989-1997, and he also inked Ron Frenz on Thor from 1991-1993. Milgrom has also inked for titles like Captain America, Generation X, The Micronauts, and the Uncanny X-Men and he would often ink the work of penciller Jim Starlin.

In the 2000s Milgrom started working for Archie Comics, regularly inking a variety of series for the publisher while continuing to freelance for DC Comics.

In 2017, Milgrom won an Inkwell Awards Special Recognition Award.
