History of Rafael Albuquerque in Comic Book Art

Rafael Albuquerque first entered the comic book industry in 2002 after taking a position working for AK Comics, an Egyptian publishing company with books published primarily throughout the Middle East.

In 2005, he published his first creator-owned graphic novel entitled Rumble in La Rambla, published under Image Comics. He also provided the artwork for Pirate Tales, published by Boom! Studios in 2006 and written by Keith Giffen and Alan Grant.

In 2007, Albuquerque illustrated Savage Brothers, a miniseries, also published by Boom! Studios. That same year, Albuquerque began drawing for DC Comics on series like Blue Beetle, Superman/Batman, Robin/Spoiler Special, Tales of the Fear Agent and Strange Adventures.

Adkins also provided the cover art for Marvel Comics' 2009 four-issue limited series Nomad: Girl Without a World.

In 2010, Albuquerque started illustrating American Vampire, a horror series published by the Vertigo Imprint under DC. One of the stories in the series was written by Stephen King, making it his first ever original work for the comic book industry. Albuquerque wrote his first original story for DC Comics in 2012, which appeared in Legends of the Dark Knight. He illustrated the story as well.

In addition to that he provided artwork for backup stories on Batman vol. 2 #21-23, which were part of the Batman: Zero Year storyline. He co-scripted the American Vampire one-shot with writer Scott Snyder in 2013 entitled, The Long Road to Hell.

Albuquerque won the 2010 IGN Award for Best New Series for American Vampire, and in 2011 that title also won him an Eisner Award for Best New Series, as well as the Harvey Award for Best New Series. In 2018 he also won an Inkpot Award for Best New Series.
